I went to go look into what it costs to subscribe to D&D Insider primarily because I want to use the character builder. It turns out that you can download and demo it for free. You can only use it for making character levels 1-3 though.

You can grab it here - http://wizards.com/download.asp?filename=700_DDI_CB.exe

The install process seems to take forever (and didn't seem to work with my netbook) but the character builder software works really nicely otherwise. I made a halfling cleric tonight in about 20 minutes.

I use Character Builder a lot and love it.  It's nice to see WotC keeping it up to date as well.  When Martial Power and PH2 came out they had the database updated in about 1-2 weeks of release.  We'll see if they keep it up with Arcane Power.  I have not experienced this with any other electronic character creation software.  Nice job WotC.

I also opted for the subscription (last year) - it's about $7 a month, I think.  This gets you the full blown CB plus Dragon and Dungeon magazine in electronic format.  It's a great deal if you ask me.  I've been stockpiling Dungeon adventures for use in my campaign for a while now and the Dragon articles are useful as well.

How can I be condemned for the things I've done, if my intentions were good?

$7 a month does seem pretty reasonable for what you get. Glad to hear your endorsement for it.
