Yeah, I've been in contact with some old buddies from there and they've been saying that the whole system is going to be weird if you decide to go the F2P route, as opposed to the VIP (subscription) package.

F2P players are limited to 2 characters, if you are downgrading from VIP you get to have 4 unlocked.  Another restriction that F2P players will have is that they will not have access to every quest within the game, nor Races/Classes.   They have to be purchased by using "Turbine Points" which you can obtain by paying real cash, or by doing various things in game.  So for example if you want to play a Drow raced character, you must either obtain the 400 favor points as it was previously, or if you want it immediately you can pay XXX Turbine Points to "unlock" it.  Warforged are going to be considered a race that will have to be purchased as well.

Some old quest chains and stuff are going to be considered premium content now, and F2P players will not be able to access them unless they purchase the adventure pack for it.  So places like, Catacombs, Delara's Graveyard and Shan-To-Kor are being considered as these premium packs.  Once you purchase you have access to it on that account permanently.  Most of the previous Mods will also be put into these premium packs.

The in-game store you will also be able to purchase various items as well while in quest.  Like say you forgot to buy arrows, ok, spend some Turbine points to get some.  Or you want to purchase a raise dead consumable that you can use while dead.  Turbine Points can get you one.

The whole microtransaction thing they are running has ruffled the feathers of a lot of hardcore and normal subscription players alike as they've been waiting for the last major update since November and they claimed it was due out around the anniversary of the game, which was back in March, with the announcement of F2P, which they claim that they fully intended to be released with the new content, they are pushing it back another month or so.  Not a very good track record for them, but it will be raising the cap to level 20, and introducing the Favored Soul as a playable class.

I never really liked DDO, but man all of that sounds like it is going to suck.  The rez item really sounds like a 'money for cheat' program.  From what I've seen of raiding it looks like high end content will eat a few dollars in rez items just for convience sake.

They need to make Conan free to play.  BY CROM!

Yeah the more I hear about it, the more it saddens me, but I suppose I can see where they think going this route will generate more cash than the straight subscription way.  Figure probably 75% of the current base will stick with their paid subs.  Then they're hoping to have an influx of people playing which if each one of them buys a little chunk of points, and then leaves, that it would make up the difference of those 25% who switched down to F2P.

The unfortunate part is that they've forced those with subscriptions to wait 8-10 months for what was scheduled to be 4 new quests and a raid.  Granted they've claimed its more than that, but they could have easily released said content and pushed the F2P model a module or two to perfect it.

Instead they've got the current playerbase ticked off because they've been paying for 7 months now with nothing to show for it, except a beta invite to test out the F2P system that they are trickling out to the public as well.  Lame-o
