Here we are, at the onset of the 2009 'Ard Boyz Season and the question still stands, "Who is the best 40k player in North America?" Over 5,000 people raised their hand last year, thinking they had the marbles, but only one player remained standing after the dust settled. Gareth Hunt brought the thunder with his Chaos Demons army and earned the right to call himself an 'Ard Boy!

Think you can take the prize? Once again, you'll have to PROVE IT!

Fight your way through the Preliminaries on Sunday July 12th. This round will be held right here in the store. Doors open at 9am, Game 1 will start promptly at 10am, things should wrap up around 7pm.

This will be a free event!

1st Place - A GW boxed set worth $60.00 or less
2nd place - A GW boxed set worth $40.00 or less
3rd place - A GW blister worth $20.00 or less

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers will be asked to attend the Semi-finals. If for some reason they cannot attend, the invitation will slip to the fourth place finisher and so on.

Players who end up in the top three will be invited to the Semifinals held in select locations on August 8th. The winner of the Semifinal will get a 2,500 point army of the race of their choice and the 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive generous online vouchers for our Web Store. These top three Semifinalists will be eligible to attend the Finals, which will be held on September 19th.

At the final event, players will compete for buckets of prizes, but more importantly, they will fight for the right to call themselves 'Ard Boys. So who will be the best this year? Are you pansies going to let a bunch of Warp-spawned filth take the title again or do you think you can wade through the Nob Bikers, Lash Princes,Thunderhammer Terminators and Carnifexes to claim victory?

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE THE PRELIMINARY ROUND:
• Register on the GW Online Store - This is necessary for you to receive prize support in the Semi Final rounds onward as we are awarding Online Store vouchers to the winners. If you are not registered, you will not receive prizes!
• Sign up at at the store for the Preliminary Round. Be sure to provide the email address that you used to register for the online store. This is the email GW will send your Online Store Voucher to if you’re in the top three.
• Review the rules of the tournament and your army. Be sure to check online and bring any FAQs or other rules updates to avoid any possible rules disputes.

Here is a link to a PDF of the rules pack. You can also take a look at the store copy. In the coming weeks, we'll add scenarios and any other pertinent information regarding the 40K 'Ard Boyz Tournaments.

A few additional notes:

I'm still looking for Judging help. As I am terribly rusty on 5th ed rules and Daniel irreparably damaged Jay last year, I will probably end up relying on a multi-player judge assisting plan. But, if you are familiar with the rules and would be willing to judge and not play, please let me know. There will be compensation!

Be sure to look over the 'Ard Boys Rules Pack BEFORE Sunday! There are several details that would be far better to handle before coming in that morning. For instance, the computer & printer will likely be very busy, so printing out your required 4 copies before Sunday would be very smart and a much safer bet.

Do   your   math. Failing that, have someone with nice penmanship do it for you. I can't emphasize enough the need to get this sorted out before Sunday. GW's officially suggested response to an incorrect list is immediate disqualification. While we will judge any infraction individually, I would sugest avoiding this issue by triple checking it and presenting it in a clear fashion both your opponents and the judge can easily review.

Ok two questions:

1) There doesn't seem to be anything in the GW errata or in the Ardboyz rules that stops the utter cheese ball tactics for orks that has been going around.  Are shennanigans frowned upon at specific locations or is this 'anything goes'?

Is that where the "Don't be a git" thing comes in?  Because otherwise I have a rules combo that WILL win this for orks.  It's completely legal ruleswise, but intensely cheesy, and not in the spirit of the rules if you ask me.

2) That picture of me NEEDS to be made public.  Could you send that to me? :)

In reverse:

2) Yeah I shopped that pic a little and then had to bend it some while in the forum set-up, so I'll send you the original image.

1) OK, been trying to answer this since 10am, but I keep getting interrupted. I'm still iffy too, especially the intent of the rule versus the ability to abuse it, and this being 'Ard Boys rather than something more composition/painting/fluff-oriented. Not quite sure yet.

Well it says "Play to win, but play nice"

I think the trick is definitely NOT playing nice as its a blatant abuse fo the rules.

Yeah, as I discuss the merits of both sides in the store, and--for better or worse--fail to find any online discussions, I can see how it could be allowed as it follows the rules but could be denied as it slaps winning nicely in the face.

I think I'd have to say this fell in the realm of "wrong-play, double-plus bad" and GW's plan of self-policing players living with fluid & leaky rules set. But I would also bet $100 bucks that judges in the semi-finals and finals would go against me. And I would hate to be resposible for a player fully prepared to win the finals getting bumped in the preliminaries because of a judge with softer views no fun and harsher punishment of interpreting rules as written.

Personally I''d play it like the cool people we are, and let the rest of the world know we are better then them...if the do rule it as ok that is.

I wish there was a way to contact the Ard Boyz committe dirctly.

You know what you can do, is you play nice at our store, and then if you make it to the semi's, you can be a jerk all you want there, its not like you need to keep the same list.

Warmachine (Cygnar) 1500 pts Warhammer (Tomb Kings) 3000 pts 40k (necrons) 2500 pts (space marines)2000 pts flames of war(british infantry)2000 pts

I'm in SC, and our store here also doing their toruney on Sunday as the 11th conflicted with an existing event.  I was wondering if your store had any plans to prohibit players from playing in a July 11th tourney at one store and also competing in a July 12th?

We're a bit torn on this (especially given how difficult it would be to enforce), but some in our group are concerned that people double dipping in the preliminary round by competing at two locations is a bit unfair.  What are your thoughts?

I think that the real question here is does GW think that this is okay? I thought that GW was the one that determined the date of the event, not the stores.

Well, yes-- and that date is July 11th.  Your store (I'm assuming) is in the same boat with another event already in place for Saturday, and thus the Sunday tournament date.

I think we've decided that it's really going to be out of our hands-- if GW wants to DQ folks who competed in mupltiple places, I imagine having people sign up with their email addys at each one might help with enforcement.

I just wish we'd had a bit more notice for the event, so we could arrange to participate on the 'right' day- eh.

Ah.. I didn't realize that.

So, aside from that I don't know that we really care that much about it. I couldn't find rules prohibiting it and there's not much of a way for us to reliably police it if we did.

That is one I had not thought of and it would be unfortunate if a couple guys ran from event to event winning multiple prizes & invitations.

But, I don't see any manageable way of preventing players from doing it, nor have I seen anything from GW either way. I suppose it's a necessary byproduct of keeping the event open to run at many locations and giving away free loot. It reminds me of how ugly it used to get for MechWarrior clickie tournaments, to the point that I came to despise all their "Limited Edition Super Rare Mech" prizes. It really brought out a bad class of players for that game.

I doubt it will happen much, and even less in this area, with the prizes not being unique or particularly sellable on Ebay.

As for the date, you can't really expect one big game company to get out of the way of another's. But still I think I might have read that GW had not noticed WotC's M10 pre-release date until after they started promoting the event, hence the option made available after to schedule for a different date.

So how was the event?  Who won?  Any drama?

Those of us who were not free on Sunday need to know!

So the dust has cleared and the results are as follows:

Erik B. took Belial and the Dark Angel Deathwing to first place with two wins and a draw. From what I saw he had a couple really close games, although some of his opponents may disagree.

Dennis G. took second with his mixed Chaos Marine force with two wins & one loss

Tim A.'s Monolith driven Necron force placed third, putting him in the top three for the third year in a row, I believe.

And as Tim decided he would not be going to th semi-finals, the invitation was extended to fourth place's Luke E. and his Holy Sisters of Battle army.

Dylan and his pure Nurgle Chaos Marine force placed 5th

Adam took 6th with more Chaos

and Max got 7th with his own Sisters force.

Sadly, no Orks found their way to the table and three folks had to bail out before the big day.

Thanks for coming to play. We had some really good sports and a couple close matches. Good luck to those going on to the next round and don't be surprised when the WYSIWYG rules are even less forgiving than me--Aardvark! Ye, of the ugly-as-ass cardboard searchlight monstrositites.

The top three (Luke, replacing Tim) have been reported to GW and so BE SURE to reserve space in the semi-finals. Remember last year, with far more locations, there was no room for those who did not pre register...and you know they are going to give defference to locals. SO SIGN UP WITH THEM ASAP! Should any of you decide to not go, the rules allow for the next player down to go, so let me know.

Now, back to my marines......
