Malifaux
Hey everybody, this is Oengus Gallagher. I come to the store to lighten my wallet everytime it gets too heavy.
I'm here to talk about Malifaux. Why?
Because it's awesome.
Malifaux is Wyrd Miniatures' first game. And it's fresh off the presses. It's a weird system (no pun intended), it doesn't even use Dice! But don't panic, there's still that pinch of Chaos we all love so much. It uses cards.
Not like Warmachine does, although it has cheat-sheets too. It uses Cards as the core basis of the game. You can even play with a regular deck! (Although, for seven bucks and a quarter you can get one of these babies not too shabby huh?)
The miniatures are as beautiful as they get, and fairly cheap to boot! (Here's a link to see them, but remember: it might be a little cheaper online, but it's hard to play games without a gamestore!)
Now I'm not trying to convince anyone to rush out and buy something they might not like, try it out first. If you play warmachine use your bases to proxxy a few games (I forgot to mention, the two games use the same bases. Although they are on a different scale, 32mm compared to WM's 28.)
That's it for now. I'm planning to order this from Seth as soon as I get some cash.
See you at the store,
~Oengus.
im still confused aboot this game ....the reserectionists looks so cools, i like he nurses and stuffs....i need 35 bucks..oengus...get a job and give me money plz? ....i dont know who to choose though....i think teh resurectionists or the arcanists,...are the minis out yets?
THe book and minis are out. The popularity has been high and so many are already alrady sold out.
We do have the book in stock, and will take orders for any of the figures.
And speaking of figures. Check out the new models, that were just posted to the Malifuax site today, that are due out in a week or two. They are six of the Totem models (Brass Archanid for Arcanists - Ramos, Wendigo for Arcanists - Rasputina, Essence of Power for Arcanists - Any Master , Purifying Flame for Guild - Sonnia Criid, Governor's Proxy for Guild - Any Master and Voodoo Doll for Neverborn - Zoraida. Looks like there is no love for the Resurrectionists or Outcasts.

Aaaw, bummer. I'm absolutely thrilled about the idea of Seamus' Copycat Killer model, so I'll be looking forward to it. This game just gets cooler and cooler.
Well I ordered my Blue Fate Deck, to go with my Arcanist Crew. Can't wait to play with it. Of course it's kinda hard to play with the Fate Deck without models
, Since GenCon, Malifaux has been a real hit and the models are selling like crazy. Seth put the Order of the Chimera Battle Box on order for me, so I just have to wait til the Distributor gets it back in stock. For now I am going to look over the Outcasts and see which ones will work the best with the Arcanists that I am using. I was look at Killjoy but I am not too crazy about have to give up one of my own model to summon him to the table. I guess I could get some Molemen and sacrifice one of them to bring Killjoy into play.
I was also looking at a second faction, like the Neverborn. I liked Lilith but Nephilim have only the baby and mature models available but not the young models. I would have to proxy the young Nephilim till they came out with the models for them. This is because the way the Nephilim work is that the small based baby Nep kills a model and gets a Blood Counter with it uses to become a medium based young Nep, which in turn kills two more models to get two Blood Counters that turn it into a large based Mature Nep. So instead I was looking at the Hag Battle Box instead because the Silrud that come in the battle box will also work with my Arcanist Crew. The Silrud are beasts and Marcus (Master from the Chimera Box) can hire beasts from any faction into his crew at no additional cost. It's a cool ability that only gives me access to two addition models, the Silrud and the Waldgiest (but this model has not been released yet) which are both Neverborn models.
So, I've picked up my two Malifaux Fate Decks. I'm not sure how I feel about them at this point. They're the size of standard Bicycle playing cards, so I haven't been able to find a good sleeving technique for them (and who wouldn't want to sleeve these things? Malifaux involves lots of shuffling!). Also, they come in a box that seems to be a wee bit too small. It's hard to open in the first place, and even harder to get them all back in. Lots of adjusting and shifting around was necessarry.
With the recquisite griping out of the way, I'm very pleased with my fate decks. They both sport the same art on the cards, the only difference being in the colored stripe on the back of the card, but it is some NICE art. Some of it (read: most of it) is on the creepy side, so anyone who's getting into the game for cowboys and gremlins (AHEM, JAL) may want to veer away from that and stick to regular playing cards. Still, the Fate Decks also list some things that aren't printed on normal cards, taking away the extra steps of figuring out what suit you're playing and what damage level the card corresponds to (that mumbo-jumbo will make more sense to those of you who out and buy rulebooks).
All in all, I'd say that the Fate Deck is a nice investment for those of us who are either lazy or want to spruce up their game with some neat cards.
You sure the Fantasy Flight "Standard Card Game Size" sleeves won't fit? They look perfect, but I don't have any of the Malifaux cards out of the box.
Rumor has it, we'll be getting a stock of box sets when this new wave hits our distributor. :)
I sleeved mine with penny sleeves. The Fantasy Flight "Standard Card Game Size" sleeves looked, at first glance, to be of the same dimensions. Was I mistaken? I'll be sure to check when I stop into the shop tomorrow. Stay tuned for more coverage!
That's alright wait til you see the model stat cards. They are supposed to open up so that you have the model's stats on the front side, and on the inside pages lists the models abilities and I beleive the triggers are listed on the back of the card. I would love to see you find a card sleeve that would allow you to have the card open so that you can see both sides at the same time. Happy hunting.
Looks like the Fantasy Flight sleeves are a no. CCG cards look to be about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch taller than standard playing cards. Oh well. Even if my Fate Deck will have some extra sleeve hanging over the top, they're still beautiful cards.
Me again everybody. Just picked up the Justice League and am ready to learn the rules of the game. (Jump feet first into everything, just like daddy taught me.)
I have a vauge understanding of the rules, but that's it.
Boy are the models pretty though... I'm gonna go back to cleaning them up now, so they can get some primer and paint.
Is there a certain day that people are playing this?
- netgeist
As with my Infinity and Uncharted Seas, I keep all of my models in the store, as well as rulebooks. I cover the store Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays in the afternoons and into the evenings, and I'm now in roleplaying runs on Thursdays and Sundays... That makes me available for games on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, or Saturdays if people can start well before 3.
The speed with which the last order of minis for the game disappeared from the store was nothing short of astounding. All of the rulebooks disappeared as well.
I watched Alex and Jal play a game the other day. It was amazing. Jal fielded Som'er Teeth Jones' starter crew and proxied some Giant Mosquitos in order to try them out. Alex used a force led by McMourning. I believe that it contained a Punk Zombie, two Flesh Constructs and Mortimer the lab assistant.
Som'er Teeth's gremlin crew was a joy to watch. It relied heavily on sacrificing units to help, heal or even create more creatures. They had a level of maneuverability that I haven't yet seen outside of Seamus' crew, and the ability to push themselves even farther by taking wounds. It was great to see him zipping about, seizing points and confounding McMourning's shambling crew.
Of course, the battle was far from one-sided. While the sneaky little gremlins ran around with their boomsticks a-blazin', McMourning's monstrosities marched on, hoping to claim a treasure in the midst of the mountain territory. The mad doctor and his assistant gathered body parts, taking them from the living and dead in order to sculpt more Flesh Constructs. At his high point before making any more constructs, I believe that Alex had 16 Body Part counters. It was a grim and gristly match.
In the end, the maneuverability of the gremlins did win them the match. Although McMourning's crew were able to smash them into pieces whenever they entered melee, the speedy little buggers managed to help Jal achieve his goals for the encounter, as well as his minor schemes, and then snatched up Alex's treasure and ran with it. They had heavy losses, but it was still a succesful fight.
I think that this example really highlights what I like about Malifaux. Each crew has a very unique and fun play style with its strengths and weaknesses, and the game actively discourages straightforward, skirmish-style "kill 'em all!" fights thanks to its randomly assigned main missions and the possibilities afforded by taking optional, VP-scoring 'schemes.' Oh, and then there was the Earthquake event. Every turn, there was a chance that the two players would get to take turns moving each others' pieces an inch each, causing chaos and disarray before the regular turn started. Good times. All in all, a wicked fun match to watch.

OENGUS. OOOEEENGUUUUUS!
I went ahead and ordered two starters; Seamus with his zombified ladies of the night and a gunslinger group. I'll be using those for demos and stuff. Now HURRY UP and get some money, I feel an overpowering need to obliterate you.
