The return of Battletech?
If you have been reading the main web page then you might have noticed the mention of the new boxed set for Battletech. Well, I've finally seen some pictures and they look really good. Check these out:

I don't get the impression that the rules are simplified. The problem has always been that the game seemed to be designed around the idea of a couple of mechs on a side. But people like to play it with a LOT more than that which slows it down quite a bit. When played with just a couple it's pretty fun and not all that slow.
Also, the original game didn't have as many optional rules/extra fiddly bits that could slow down play.
Did you play with the old boxed set or with some form of book+maps+minis?
When Warmachine first came out what drew me to it was the visceral combat system. That is, filling in boxes that represent damage taken to specific locations. This was highly "Battletech" to me and it was one of the elements of Battletech that I always enjoyed.
I have no idea which one we played. A friend of mine always ran it.
I also liked the damage boxes, but didn't like the fact that it took FOREVER to cause any real damage...

Interesting...I wonder if the rules would be streamlined. When I played way back it took FOREVER...
