Just saw Bridge to Tarabithia....
It made me remember what a rarity it is to find a good kid-oriented fantasy, and how this wasn't one of them. It was so Disney it made me sad.
It was light and inconsequential like a soap bubble trying to be a rain cloud. I kind of felt they had taken the original story and deleted anything that may have been percieved as "complex" or to thought-provoking for children. Too bad, as it looked like they spent a little bit of money on effects.
My suggestion if you'r ethinking of renting this; go see Chronic
Warning! The link above is as safe for work as any Saturday Night Live skit is, but very much worth seeing. You decide.
Pans Labyrinth was brilliant, but I wouldn't lump it in with Children's fantasy. The director didn't intend it for children, and having seen it I wouldn't want to show it to the same audience that gobbles up Disney and Harry Potter Flicks. (Not that there is anything wrong with some Disney Movies or Harry Potter.)
The brutality of the movie was above and beyond the call of duty. There was no question in your mind that everybody shot in that movie was quite certainly dead. Anybody who was simply wounded soon had that problem remedied by immediately being executed or tortured and then executed. Most action / war movies don't have nearly as realistic violence.
On a side note the fairy scene was pretty cool and the kind of thing that would leave kids with nightmares for years. I'm reminded of the slim jim commercials where a wrestler would burst through a wall and take a huge bite out of a fist full of slim jim.
Star Dust is recent and pretty cool, but it isn't really targeted at children either. It is kind of like Shrek, kids can see it and appreciate the visuals, exaggerated characters and simple story. However, almost all of the humor will be better appreciated by adults than children.
I'll probably see the Golden Compass in theaters just so that I can witness the awesome Mercenary / Blacksmith armored polar bear on the big screen. Also watching her wage war with a bunch of Russian looking fellows seems amusing as well. The previews are cool enough to keep me optimistic.
How long until a Never Ending Story remake?
Golden Compass will be a very good movie is they stick to the book.(which seems to be Hollywoods plans nowadays) The book is mostly about the characters and power of children, and polar bears.
Really the whole series is very good. The second book is a lot of fun, with a solid male lead who is equally entertaining to charming Lyra from the first book. The third book will most likely need to be changed for theaters, because its action ends about 200 pages before the book ends. Also there are some forced plot points that seem to tie up badly and a few things that are just flat out silly but the way the author wanted them.
My main problem with the books is the author, who is sort of a jerk at times. He liked to put his writing "above" normal fantasy works. Really he says its not "fantasy" at all, but a story about people. There are freaking talking, armored polar bears and witchs who fly on the wind in is book. He also has a major problem with ramming his own beliefs down your neck. This is the final problem with the last book.
Still, they are worth reading and are very fun. The BBC audio drama, which has a full cast, is the best audio book Ive ever heard. Its worth checking out.(better than watching TV, really)

I think something has been GREATLY lost in translation when I hear the words "Fairy tale". Fairies weren't all nice and sweet. Some were supposed to be downright nasty and evil.
To get a decent modern grasp on how fairy tales are SUPPOSED to be, check out the book "Farie Tale" by Raymond E. Feist. Awesome book.
Now to get back on the subject of movies...
At Gencon I ought a copy of the silent "Call of Cthuhlu" movie. It was just fantastic. This is worth a buy my friends. Go out and get this movie...
Speaking of gencon...the friend who invited me was talking about a movie he thought was hysterical. "The Gamers". He lent me a copy and I finally got to read it today.
GOD IN HEAVEN don't watch this movie. Its quite possibly the WORST thing I have ever seen. I was so close to just shutting it off in the very middle, but I figured it HAD to get better...no luck.
The movie was so stupid, I couldn't even MST3K it....
I'm crying inside...
I want those 48 minutes of my life back. :.(...
I'm confused, Charlie. You really hated "The Gamers?" Your page breaks make me think you deleted something.
I liked "The Gamers" for what it was, especially the rogue demanding to rephrase his actions repeatedly...freaking players.
The Golden Compass....Oh, yes, I am very prepared to enjoy this one.
Pan's Labrynth I put there with LOTR as far as age range, but it was more brutal than I suspect American/non-independent viewers are used to. The editors didn't appear to be afraid of the ratings board approval on the violence.

Nope...its all there...
I think that was one of the THREE parts that I chuckled (not LOLed) at...when the rogue gets shot in the face with the trap....can't remember the other two...
No, I hated that movie more than anything I've ever seen. I'd even watch CHICAGO again instead of The Gamers.
Yeah, I understand the premise that it was a salute to all things geeky and how annoying players can get while playing, and how some things in the games are just goofy (like the str 6 guy lifting the gate). But it was so terribly done, and just wasn't funny.
A CHILD could have written something better.
ew bridge to teribithiya! if i wanted to waste 1.5 hours of my life i could be posting on this forum! duh!!!! :P
good movies..... i personally liked the prestige
Well if you enjoyed The Prestige I would also recommend The Illusionist. They're sort of like two episodes of the same show--and they came out so quickly one after the other, it's hard to tell who copied who. Then again, they're both so painfully derivative that it doesn't really matter! :D
Wow, Coop. I was just about to post the same thing, and then happened to check the thread again before posting.
Also, how did this thread get so derailed. Wasn't it about kid oriented fantasy movies? Gamers and the Prestige, pfffffft.
Both Sunshine and that piratey odd Star Something are here in Gfld right now.
I want to see both, and Sunshine is sci-fi, but the only other thing that I know about it is that I really want to see it. I've successfully been insulating myself to be totally unprepared for whatever it was that made me want to see it so much in the first place; which is my favorite "zone" in which to go see a movie.....Some bastard will of course be talking in the theatre though and end up making me really angry, cest la vie.
I intend to not read this thread again until after seeing it for fear that someone will post some critique or one-line review of it and wreck the whole tabula rasa effect.
Good time for Cooper to insult my lineage and get away with it--for a couple days at least.
Ah! At last! :D *cracks knuckles*

Ever wonder if there are real life shadowrunners stealing the scripts for the opposition? :)
And not just movies...I see it everywhere. its rather amusing :)
i wonder if there is a carrier in that? or is it a low job, like a profesional theif had to sink so low as to become a script snatcher.... duhn duhn duhhhhnn
Bridge to terabithia didn't seem to have a plot to me
TRANSFORMERS ROCKED!!!
the only reason why I didn't watch bridge to terabithia was that I thought it would ruin the book for me, looks like I was right. It's really unfortunate when they take a good book and ruin it for the big screen.
And the Prestige was pretty amazing. Loved it.

Yup..never bothered with that one.
I rented neverwas the other night...kinda neat. Not fantasy though...
I also suggest Pan's Labyrinth, if you're ok with subtitles...
