TempleCon 2009
Yay! Seth is going to TempleCon 2009 in Providence in February. Well technically Andrea and Seth are going, but she has no interest in this Con.
This has apparently become one of the most active mini game cons in the Nation, at least for WM. I'm especially excited as it might not yet be overloaded with the Anime/Gundam/Cosplay/Furries that appear to be overwhelming most of the big cons. Although they do have a big WWP/Vampire following, but I can live with that.
Three days of Mini games, board games, mini games, RPGs, mini games, beer and more mini games!!! I think I'll be bringing WM, Flames of War and some board games, mostly just looking for casual games and goofy formats for WM/Hordes.
Then a couple weeks later is TotalCon! But I'm working a booth all that extended weekend.
Whee!!!
Most excellent. It would be nice to see some familiar faces there!
I'm hoping to find some time as well to help out PP...

So Templecon was a mixed bag for me.
I didn't know anyone in the huge Warmachine/Hordes room, and it felt a lot more like a MtG tournament hall than a minis game fun time. It felt too much like they were trying to churn out as many games as possible in a dark (entirely my opinion) smelly, too cold at first then too hot, rather crowded noisy hall. Being overly timid and picky, I ended up playing no WM or Hordes all weekend. If I had found someone I knew, so I could feel comfortable having my rulebook out (no one in the whole hall had one out) and moving along slowly as I remembered how to play, I might have gotten into it. It's crazy. I don't think I've played WM in over 6 months! And I came away from what was the focus of Templecon feeling like I'd wasted alot of my time. Next time I'm hauling one or two of you with me, like it or not!
I did get some great games of Flames of War in. Thanks, Jal, for playing some this January. I look forward to more battles. I mostly got losses and draws, but the crowd was really mature, humorous and a blast to spend time with. I tended to not care less if I won or lost by the end.
I wish I'd brought my WH Fantasy, even if it's a lot to haul. I didn't because I was afraid the tournament environment would just make it full of Daemons, Dark Elves and Vampires and too much min-maxing. I was totally wrong (must remember to pay less heed to forums). There was a total mix represented, including two Ogre Kingdom forces and a crazy Ork & Goblin army where the conversions were all goblin & squig-related awesomeness; like a giant Squig instead of the actual giant model, and an abundance of mushrooms all over the place.
The Magic and Video games were typical and decent for their needs.
The board gaming, panel discussions, movies and all the vendors other than the Warstore all seemed shoved into odd spaces that didn't really encourage visiting them, so I didn't much. They should have called this con "The Warstore Presents: Templecon 2009."
The hotel and Providence were excellent. Getting around if you stayed elsewhere would be easy. Supposedly the food in the hotel was good, with real good cheap cheeseburgers.
Overall, I'd go again, but I'd take a gamer buddy instead of Andrea, as wanting to spend time with her distracted me from getting wrapped up in the gamer-nerd scene.
edit: Charlie, you were missed by Snakeman and some of the crew. We figured you were working too much to come by.
edit #2: The painting contest was ok, except is was popular vote based and so even though I think the winners were nicely done, the votes were so close (between 1 for last and around 20 for first from what I saw), having five friends vote for you would have definitely bumped you up a place, at least. I think my Evlad came somewhere near the upper half of about 13 models so that was nice.

Sigh...yeah. I just can't really afford hotel rooms, gas to get there, etc etc...and then of course I'd have to clsoe the store for that time.
I totally wanted to go.

Ack! How did I miss this thread?
Meg and I have some tentative plans to be at Templecon, as my whole (former) WM group has plans to head down. Oh, and HARDCORE is a great format.
